🍉 Watermelon Slice Keychain

A sweet little amigurumi keychain you can stitch up in an afternoon — no experience required!

🧶 Beginner Friendly⏱ 1–2 Hours🪝 4.25 mm Hook🆓 Free Pattern

If you’re looking for a quick, satisfying crochet project that’s equal parts cute and clever, this Watermelon Slice Keychain is exactly what you need. The secret? It’s crocheted as a flat circle, then simply folded in half and seamed — no complex shaping, no fuss. Just pure cottagecore summer sweetness dangling from your keys. 🍉

The alternating increase placement in this pattern is intentional — it keeps the tip of your watermelon slice nice and straight rather than curvy, giving you that perfect half-moon shape every time.

Before you begin: This pattern is worked in continuous rounds. No joining, no turning — just grab your stitch marker and go! The increase placement alternates each round on purpose to create a straighter edge when folded.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked in continuous rounds — no joining, no turning. Use a stitch marker to track the beginning of each round, and move it up as you go.

The increase placement alternates intentionally each round. This distributes the shaping evenly so your finished circle folds into a clean, straight-tipped watermelon slice — don’t change the order!

Change colors by completing the last yarn-over of the stitch before the new color, then pulling the new color through to finish.

The Pattern

Red

  • Rnd 1: MR 6  (or ch 2, work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook) (6)
  • Rnd 2:(inc) × 6 (12)
  • Rnd 3:(sc, inc) × 6 (18)
  • Rnd 4:(inc, sc 2) × 6 (24)
  • Rnd 5:(sc 3, inc) × 6 (30)
  • Rnd 6:(inc, sc 4) × 6 (36)
  • Rnd 7:(sc 5, inc) × 6 (42)

Change to White

  • Rnd 8:sc around (42)

Change to Green

  • Rnd 9:sc around (42)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for assembly.

Assembly

  1. Fold the circle in half with the Red side facing out, creating a half-moon watermelon slice shape.
  2. With Green yarn, single crochet (sc) evenly along the straight folded edge to join the two layers together.
  3. To add the keychain: ch 6, thread the chain through a keychain ring, then sl st into the top center of the watermelon slice. Fasten off and use the leftover yarn tail to sew and reinforce the join.
  4. Weave in all remaining ends.

Optional finishing: Using black embroidery floss or black yarn, stitch small oval or teardrop shapes onto the red surface to represent seeds. Lightly steam block to flatten and shape if desired.

Tips & Tricks

  • Leave 6″+ tails when fastening off each color — it makes weaving in ends so much easier.
  • If your magic ring is too loose, try starting with a slip knot and ch 2, then working sc into the second chain instead.
