If you’ve spent any time in the amigurumi corner of the internet, you’ve probably seen a dozen “cow” patterns that all boil down to the same thing: a round body, some spots, done. Cute, but not exactly a Highland Cow — that shaggy, soulful, slightly-surprised-looking creature with the fringe you just want to sink your hands into.

I wanted to design one that actually looked like a Highland Cow. That meant solving two problems I hadn’t seen many patterns tackle well: a head that shapes smoothly instead of lumpy or pointed, and a fringe technique that reads as “shaggy coat” instead of “yarn scraps glued on.” Heather is the result.

There are some projects you start just because they sound fun. And then there are the ones that quietly become something more — something you didn’t expect to care about quite so much. Lady Liberty was one of those.

With America’s 250th birthday coming up on July 4th, I felt this pull to make something that celebrated the occasion in a way only crochet can — soft, handmade, and full of heart. The Statue of Liberty felt like the perfect choice. Iconic. Recognizable. Meaningful.

But here’s the thing about Lady Liberty: she didn’t start with yarn. She started in my head — months before I ever picked up a hook.

I spent a long time just thinking about her. What should she look like in amigurumi form? What aesthetic did I want — cute and chibi, or something a little more dignified? Which stitches could capture the drape of her robe, the structure of her crown, the delicate details that make her her? There were sketches in my mind, late-night rabbit holes of reference photos, and more than a few moments of “I don’t know if I can actually pull this off.” The mental work of designing a pattern is something crafters don’t always talk about, but it’s real — and with Lady Liberty, it was months in the making before a single stitch was crocheted. And once I finally started, she was, as I was about to discover, really tricky to get right in amigurumi form.
