Some crochet projects come out perfectly. This is not that story.
Let me introduce you to Gappy — my very first crochet project, my greatest teacher, and honestly one of my most treasured creations ever.
Look at him. Really look at him. Those gaps you can see right through. Those slightly lopsided eyes. Those wonderfully chunky little toes. He is absolutely, completely, perfectly imperfect — and I wouldn’t change a single stitch.
I made Gappy for my son before I really knew what I was doing. I had a pattern, a hook, some bright green yarn, and a whole lot of determination. Every time I hit a stitch I didn’t know I’d hunt down a YouTube tutorial and figure it out — one stitch, one video, one row at a time.
The gauge was wrong. The tension was inconsistent. There are gaps you could poke your finger through. When I finished him I honestly wondered if I should start over.
But then I gave him to my son.
His face lit up like Christmas morning. He grabbed that gappy green alligator and hugged him tight — and in that moment I knew two things. First, that my son saw nothing but love when he looked at Gappy. And second, that I was never going to stop crocheting.
Gappy sits in our home to this day — a permanent reminder that your first project doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to be made with love.
Every pattern I share on this blog, every tutorial I make on YouTube, every stitch I teach — it all started with this gloriously gappy little alligator.
So thank you Gappy. You started everything. 💚
With yarn & love, Maribel 🧶
