My Favorite Yarn & Hook Recommendations for Amigurumi 🧶

By Maribel · Maribel Designs 4 U · Tips & Tricks

One of the questions I get asked most often is — “What yarn and hooks do you use?” And honestly it’s one of my favorite things to talk about! The right supplies can make such a difference in how your amigurumi turns out, especially when you’re just starting out.

Before we dive in, a quick note — I’m part of the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program. But more importantly, I’m not sponsored by anyone, and I only recommend what I truly use. These are the real supplies sitting in my craft basket — the same ones I reach for every time I pick up my hook. 💕

💡 Quick tip: You don’t need to buy everything at once! Start with one hook and one skein of yarn. The best supplies are the ones you actually have in your hands!

My Go-To Crochet Hook 🪡

Susan Bates Silvalume Hooks

Susan Bates has been my go-to hook for years and I always recommend them to beginners. They’re affordable, easy to find at almost any craft store or online, and they get the job done beautifully. The aluminum shaft slides through yarn smoothly which is really important when you’re working tight amigurumi stitches.

For amigurumi I mostly reach for my 3.5mm or 4.25mm Susan Bates hooks depending on the yarn I’m using. They’re lightweight and comfortable for long crochet sessions too!

Where to buy: Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, Walmart, Amazon — pretty much anywhere!

💡 Hook size matters!! For amigurumi you generally want to go DOWN one hook size from what the yarn label recommends. This gives you tighter stitches so your stuffing doesn’t peek through!

My Favorite Yarn for Amigurumi 🧶

Red Heart Super Saver

Red Heart Super Saver is honestly one of the best kept secrets in amigurumi! It’s 100% acrylic which means it’s easy to care for, holds its shape beautifully, and comes in the most incredible range of colors. When I made my very first amigurumi — that famous gappy alligator — I used Red Heart and I still reach for it all the time!

For amigurumi specifically I love Red Heart because:

• It’s smooth and consistent — great for even stitches
• The color range is huge — you can find pretty much any color you need
• It’s very affordable — perfect when you’re still learning
• It’s available almost everywhere — no special ordering needed
• Finished amigurumi feel firm and hold their shape well

Where to buy: Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, Walmart, Amazon — wherever yarn is sold!

Other Supplies I Always Have on Hand 🛍️

The Essentials

Beyond yarn and hooks here’s what I always keep in my craft basket:

  • Stitch markers — absolutely essential for amigurumi! I use them to mark the beginning of each round so I never lose my place
  • Polyfill stuffing — the kind from any craft store works perfectly. Don’t overstuff!
  • Yarn needle — for sewing pieces together and weaving in ends
  • Scissors — a small sharp pair dedicated just to crafting
  • Row counter — either a physical one or a free app on your phone. Counting rounds saves so much frustration!

My Honest Shopping Tip 💡

I shop wherever is most convenient and has the best price that day — Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, Walmart, or Amazon! I always check for coupons first though. Hobby Lobby and Michael’s run sales constantly. Never pay full price for craft supplies if you can help it!! 😄

At the end of the day the most important thing is just to start. Don’t wait until you have the perfect supplies. Grab what’s available near you and get hooking — your first amigurumi is waiting to be made!! 🧶💕
