If you’ve ever finished a crochet project that was far from perfect but gave it to someone you love anyway — this one’s for you.
Welcome to Maribel Designs 4 U — my cozy little corner of the internet where I share free crochet patterns, step-by-step video tutorials, and everything I’ve learned over five years of being completely obsessed with yarn. If you love amigurumi as much as I do, you are going to feel right at home here.
But before we get into patterns and tutorials, I want to tell you how all of this started. Because it didn’t start with a perfectly made project or a fancy setup. It started with a lumpy, gap-filled, absolutely imperfect little alligator — and my son’s face when I handed it to him.
The alligator that started it all 🐊
My very first crochet project was an amigurumi alligator — made from scratch, for my son. I had never crocheted before in my life. I found a pattern, took a deep breath, and just dove in. Every time I hit a stitch I didn’t recognize, I’d pause and search for a YouTube tutorial on exactly that stitch. That’s genuinely how I learned — one stitch, one video, one row at a time.
The finished alligator had gaps everywhere. My gauge was completely off, the tension was inconsistent, and honestly it looked like it had been through some things. I stared at it wondering if I should just start over.
But then I gave it to my son.
His face absolutely lit up. He loved that little alligator with all of his heart — gaps and all. He didn’t see the uneven stitches or the wrong gauge. He just saw something his mom had made especially for him. That moment right there? That’s why I never stopped crocheting.
From one alligator to hundreds of projects 🧸
After that first project I was completely hooked. I kept learning the same way — finding patterns I loved and using YouTube tutorials to figure out the stitches I didn’t know yet. It’s honestly one of the best ways to learn because you’re always working on something you actually want to make, which keeps you motivated.
Slowly my tension evened out, my gauge improved, and my little amigurumi creatures started looking more and more like the photos in the patterns. I made frogs, bears, cats, tiny food items — and yes, more alligators, much better ones this time!
What surprised me most was how calming the whole process felt. After a long day, sitting down with my hook and yarn and just counting stitches became my reset button. My peace. My little meditation. Five years later I’ve made hundreds of projects, designed my own original patterns, and started a whole YouTube channel dedicated to helping other people fall in love with crochet the same way I did.
Why I created this blog 💕
When I was learning I spent a lot of time searching for clear, beginner-friendly tutorials and free patterns that were actually well-written. Some were great. A lot were confusing. And I always wished there was one place I could go that felt warm, welcoming, and easy to follow.
That’s exactly what I want Maribel Designs 4 U to be for you. Every pattern I share here is completely free. Every tutorial I make — both here and on my YouTube channel — is designed to be easy to follow no matter where you are in your crochet journey. Whether you’re picking up a hook for the very first time or you’ve been at it for years, you belong here.
My whole goal is for you to finish a project and feel genuinely proud of what you made. Even if it has a few gaps. Especially if it has a few gaps — because that just means someone you love made it for you with their whole heart.
